Recruit Information

Periodically we conduct recruitment drives for the position of Deputy Sheriff. Our last recruitment effort ended in the spring of 2005. The top candidates who successfully completed the process were invited to attend the 2006 Deputy Sheriff Training Academy. Below you can find the minimum requirements necessary to be selected as a Deputy Sheriff Candidate. We will be adding an "Applicant Letter of Interest" for people interested in submitting their names for the next hiring process. Candidates must possess a high school diploma AND satisfy ONE of the following additional requirements:

Associates Degree (or 60 college credits) or higher in law enforcement or criminal justice from a college of recognized standing.
Two (2) years of active military service or four (4) years of Military Reserve, National Guard or Coast Guard duty.
Three (3) years of full time employment as a correctional officer.
Successful completion of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy, State Police, Providence Police or comparable certified program offered by any state or municipal police departments.
Two (2) or more years of full-time employment in a position requiring the maintenance of law and order and the protection of life and property, including the responsibility for the arrest and detention of persons in violation of the law.

Must be in good physical, medical and psychological requirements
Must undergo a criminal background check and drug testing
Must meet State of Rhode Island qualification requirements to carry weapons in the performance of duty
Must maintain such qualification requirements as a condition of employment
Must possess a valid RI Drivers license
